Review: Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates is latest comedy currently in theaters. It has a solid cast, who have all proven themselves they can do comedy very well. The two leads are Zac Efron and Adam Devine who play the brothers looking for wedding dates. They make a solid comic duo, with Efron playing more of the straight man, while Devine is the more silly one of the duo. Really though, they are both pretty wild, and portray the crazy, frat-boys very well. The two other leads are Aubrey Plaza, from Parks and Recreation, and Anna Kendrick. They both play characters who are not the typical female leads you might see in most other comedies. They are as raunchy, and crazy as Mike and Dave. Really the whole movie is just the four characters acting crazy, childish, and ridiculous the entire movie. The characters don’t even seem like real people most of the time. They do all have their moments though, and it makes for some pretty funny scenes. When the actors are together, it usually makes for some funny comedy.

However, even though there are some funny scenes, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates is really just a mess. The plot for this movie is silly, and should not be taken seriously. I won’t go on about how lazy this movie was filmed, and the numerous plot holes, because really this is a film that should not be taken with too much thought. It’s another mindless, raunchy, forgettable comedy that Hollywood seems to love these days. This is the kind of world we live in now, so I will just end that thought right there.

This movie has a great foursome of actors as the leads, but their characters are very one-dimensional. We don’t really know much about each character, and there isn’t any motive behind their actions, besides just for laughs. It makes for some historically comedy at first, but after a while, I just got tired of it. This movie tried to put in some serious scenes at times, but they seemed forced and not earned. That just ruined the pace of the film, that would have worked better if it was just an all-out, screwball comedy. This movie had to rely on just being hilarious, and it struggled with getting non-stop laughs throughout. There were some hilarious scenes, but the one scene that got the biggest laugh was already in the trailer. Lastly, there were some really uncomfortable scenes that were cringe-worthy, and not funny at all.

Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, is a movie that, although can be very funny at times, overall is just another forgettable American comedy. There is nothing really memorable about it, and it struggled with pacing and story issues. However, if you are a big fan of Zac Efron, Anna Kendrick, or Adam Devine, than you might enjoy it. Those actors are really big now, and they were all very funny at times. Devine and Efron made a pretty solid duo. I loved the first scene of the movie. Although, I still think Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum are a better comic duo right now. None of the supporting cast really stood out, and there was only one scene with Jake Johnson (New Girl) which was hilarious, and I was hoping he would have a bigger part, because I loved that actor! Nevertheless, this wasn’t a terrible film, and I think that people who really like the actors would enjoy it. This movie is probably for a younger audience, like high school and college students. It makes for some pretty funny, but raunchy humor. If you like that type of humor, than this is the movie might be for you. Just don’t expect an intelligent script, or any great characters. My grade for this movie is:

2.5/5
